Lift Replacement
Why the lift replacement is needed, how the programme will be delivered and what residents should expect, including communication and disruption management.
Why the Lifts Are Being Replaced
Why the Lifts Are Being Replaced
The lifts across the Brunswick are approaching the end of their operational life and no longer meet the reliability, performance or maintenance standards expected for a building of this size. Camden’s asset management assessments, combined with routine servicing reports, have identified increasing levels of wear, component ageing and rising maintenance demand. Replacement is therefore necessary to improve safety, ensure compliance with current regulations, and reduce the repeated outages that have affected residents in recent years.
Lift replacement is a major capital programme within Camden’s long-term plan to upgrade essential estate infrastructure. The project aims to improve reliability, reduce unplanned breakdowns and provide lifts that meet modern accessibility expectations. Although the works are significant, the long-term outcome is improved performance, safer operation, and a system designed to serve the estate for decades.
What the Replacement Programme Involves
The lift replacement programme involves removing existing equipment, upgrading or renewing lift cars, replacing control systems and installing new mechanical and electrical components. This may include modernisation of door mechanisms, safety systems, lighting, communication features and energy-efficient motors. While the technical details are managed by Camden and specialist contractors, residents will see a combination of dismantling, installation and commissioning works at different stages of the project.
Because each block has its own configuration, the programme will be delivered in phases. This helps reduce disruption and allows contractors to focus on one lift at a time while maintaining essential access where possible. During these phases, residents may notice temporary hoarding, contractor materials, and movement of equipment through designated routes. Camden will provide notice before key stages begin and will outline which lifts are affected at each point in the schedule.
How the Works Will Be Delivered on the Estate
Lift replacement requires coordinated access to lift shafts, plant rooms and communal corridors. Contractors will work within agreed hours and will use designated routes for transporting equipment to minimise impact on residents. Temporary protection may be installed around entrance lobbies, landings and circulation routes to safeguard walls, floors and fixtures during the works.
Residents may experience some noise, vibration or short-term restrictions in particular areas while equipment is being moved or assembled. Camden will issue advance notice of these activities and provide updates where works are likely to affect access or create noticeable disruption. Safety measures will be in place throughout, including secure work zones, clear signage and restrictions in areas where contractors are operating.
The aim is to complete the works efficiently while maintaining as much normal access as possible, keeping communal areas safe, and ensuring that residents are informed at every stage.
Access, Mobility & Temporary Arrangements
During replacement works, lifts will need to be taken out of service for periods of time. Camden will provide a schedule showing when each lift will be unavailable and how long it is expected to remain out of operation. Where a block has multiple lifts, the programme will normally be arranged to ensure that at least one remains in service whenever possible.
Residents with mobility needs, health conditions or other circumstances that make stairs difficult should contact Camden before the works begin so that appropriate support can be arranged. This may include temporary assistance, advice on access routes, or coordination with support services. Camden will also provide guidance on what to do if unplanned issues arise during the works, such as delays or emergency repairs.
Communication will be essential, and residents will receive updates in advance so they can plan around the periods when lifts are unavailable. The aim is to ensure that those who require additional support receive it promptly and consistently.
Communication, Updates & Reporting Issues During Works
Camden will issue regular updates throughout the lift replacement programme, including notices in communal areas, letters delivered to residents and information published through official channels. These updates will outline progress, confirm upcoming phases, and highlight any changes to the schedule. Residents should review these communications to stay informed about the status of works affecting their block.
If issues arise during the project — such as concerns about dust, noise, access or safety — residents can report them directly to Camden using the designated contact routes for major works. Contractors may also have a site supervisor who can address immediate practical issues where appropriate. Once the lifts are installed, they will undergo testing, commissioning and safety checks before being returned to service.
The final stage involves handover documentation and confirmation that the new lifts meet performance and safety standards. Residents will be informed when works are complete and when normal service has resumed.
